Making your own bread - the old fashioned
way.
With
a growing family it's easy to eat a loaf of bread per day. Maybe even
a loaf per meal.
Bread is expensive and flour is cheap so at one point you decide to make
your own bread.
But bread machines are expensive and make only one loaf at a time, which
is fine for Grandma but not enough to feed a growing family.
What did the Romans do? There were no machines, they made the bread
themselves without the benefit of a microwave oven or fast-rising yeast
Here is a method of making bread, it's VERY low tech. Sort of:
- Start the yeast in the morning while making coffee
- Add the first round of flour after 1/2 hour, knead and let rise for
2 hours
- Roll it into the bread pans and leave on counter to rise for an hour
or 2
- Put it in the oven for about 25 minutes on 400.
- Remove and turn the loaves on their sides to cool
- Serve with lunch or dinner
- Rinse and repeat daily or twice a week
Once you have mastered this basic recipe you can easily make raisin
breads, buns, coffee cakes, Danish pastries and more.
